The temperature was \u201conly\u201d 40\u00b0C (after Iraq\u2019s 45, that actually felt like a relief), so the ride was easier, and we could finally take a breather from all the border crossings. Paperwork? None. No one asked for the <a href=\"https:\/\/warsawtravelers.pl\/en\/guides\/carnet-de-passages-and-leasing\/\">Carnet de Passages<\/a>, no questions about the notarial authorization for the bike. You\u2019ve got a vehicle? OK. We had some \u201cstore-bought\u201d croissants, packed up our bags, and hit the road around 9:00. The fatigue from the previous rides was catching up with us \u2014 that\u2019s what happens when you try to see too much in too little time. For next time, five hours a day seems like the sweet spot, not seven to nine hours in the saddle.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The stretch to Hail was just a straight line on the map \u2014 road signs, trucks, and wind in the helmet. Highway-level boredom. First some music, then just the hum and silence. Coffee finished, so we kept rolling.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Before entering Saudi Arabia, we had bought an eSIM from one provider, but my phone ended up connecting to Zain, which had terrible coverage along our route \u2014 often barely 2G, with LTE or 5G showing up only occasionally. I was supposed to jump on a work call \u201con the road\u201d, but with 2G, even MS Teams wouldn\u2019t have a chance.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">There wasn\u2019t enough signal to send a regular text either, so I used the Garmin \u2014 sent a short satellite message to my colleague explaining the situation \ud83d\ude03. When I got back to Poland, I repaid him with a small alcoholic thank-you gift.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">The ride itself was manageable \u2014 around 36\u201337\u00b0C. But once we entered <a href=\"https:\/\/warsawtravelers.pl\/en\/asia\/al-ula-our-experience-in-saudi-arabia\/\">Al-Ula<\/a>, the thermometer jumped to 41\u201343\u00b0C, and the oven-like heat was back. We booked an apartment for the night, and only upon arrival did we find out there was no Wi-Fi. Oh well \u2014 had to buy an extra data package for the SIM card.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">In the evening, we went out for coffee at Starbucks in <a href=\"https:\/\/warsawtravelers.pl\/en\/asia\/al-ula-our-experience-in-saudi-arabia\/\">Al-Ula\u2019s<\/a> old town. Really nice \u2014 surprisingly so, actually. During the day, with that kind of heat, the place is pretty much dead, but once the sun goes down, it comes alive. The proper sightseeing will have to wait until things cool off a bit.<\/p><ul class=\"ul1\"><li class=\"li1\">\u231a\ufe0f <b>Travel time: <\/b>7 hours 30 minutes;<\/li><li target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Saudi Arabia, Al-Ula<\/a> -&gt; \ud83c\uddf8\ud83c\udde6 <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/aBAGuvgbiLr89V8G6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Saudi Arabia, Ha&#8217;il<\/a><\/p><p class=\"p1\">Our time in <a href=\"https:\/\/warsawtravelers.pl\/en\/asia\/al-ula-our-experience-in-saudi-arabia\/\">Al-Ula<\/a> came to an end. For the last night, we decided to try something different \u2014 sleeping in a camper. It was quite an experience since neither of us had done that before: a postcard-perfect night sky, total silence, and just the steady hum of the air conditioning. We\u2019ve written a separate post all about our stay in Al-Ula \u2014 what we saw, where we ate, and how not to blow your budget in a place that can get pretty \u201cluxury\u201d. Check it out if you\u2019re planning a visit.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">We split the route to Riyadh into two days \u2014 simply because neither of us felt like doing another 10-hour ride. Instead of staying in Buraydah again, we picked Ha\u2019il. The road was familiar \u2014 the same one we\u2019d taken earlier to get to Al-Ula \u2014 so no surprises: steady, smooth, and\u2026 a bit boring at times. It was Saudi National Day \u2014 the anniversary of the country\u2019s unification and the proclamation of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 1932 by King Abdulaziz (the decree that renamed the Kingdom of Nejd and Hejaz to KSA). That\u2019s why there were flags hanging from overpasses, giant flagpoles mounted on car tow hooks, and air shows over the city. They celebrate it every year on September 23rd \u2014 it\u2019s a fixed date.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">In the evening, we went out near our place for some Indian food. We asked for the mildest options possible. After today\u2019s off-road ride\u2026 yeah, not so shiny anymore.<\/p><p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/warsawtravelers.pl\/en\/asia\/saudi-arabia-edge-of-the-world\/\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>Edge of the World<\/b><\/span><\/a> it\u2019s the rocky edge of the Tuwaiq escarpment, about 90\u2013100 km from Riyadh \u2014 a sudden, sheer drop with vertical cliffs plunging hundreds of meters down. The last stretch isn\u2019t paved \u2014 gravel, sand, washboard sections, and occasional rocks. We went there aiming for sunset, so after our morning work calls, we left around 2 p.m. The asphalt ended quickly, and then the rattling began. Those 20 kilometers took us almost an hour; our legs were burning, and all I could think about was the fact that we still had to ride back. At one of the viewpoints, I just told Jadzia straight: \u201cI\u2019ll enjoy the view from here \u2014 you go ahead. If anything happens, just yell\u201d. \ud83e\udd23<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Along the way, we lost a few bolts from the pannier racks, but other than that, Stefan survived \u2014 well done, BMW. On the way back, we zip-tied whatever we could and pushed on, trying to make it back to the asphalt before dark. We made it, though the ride back was no less exhausting. Breakfast at McDonald\u2019s, full tank, and off we went. The views\u2026 still not the most exciting, but the ride was nice and smooth. Most importantly \u2014 we weren\u2019t sweating like after a shower anymore. Goodbye, \u201ctired construction worker\u201d aroma under the helmet xD<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Leaving Saudi Arabia was quick \u2014 a short check to confirm we didn\u2019t owe anything, and then a friendly \u201csafe travels.\u201d On the UAE side, things went smoothly too, right up until the last checkpoint, where a soldier pointed at our Insta360 on its mount. He thought we were recording. We showed him it was turned off. Besides, we\u2019ve been here plenty of times before \u2014 check out our posts about what to see in <a href=\"https:\/\/warsawtravelers.pl\/en\/asia\/united-arab-emirates-top-attractions-to-see-in-abu-dhabi\/\">Abu Dhabi,<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/warsawtravelers.pl\/en\/asia\/uae-what-to-see-in-sharjah\/\">Sharjah<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/warsawtravelers.pl\/en\/asia\/united-arab-emirates-what-do-we-recommend-seeing-while-in-dubai\/\">Dubai<\/a> \ud83d\ude03 Technically, we could\u2019ve pushed through the <span class=\"s1\"><b>Empty Quarter <\/b><\/span>(Rub\u2019 al Khali), but not in this weather and without proper prep. That \u201cempty quarter\u201d is a massive sea of sand \u2014 the largest sandy desert in the world. In summer, it gets hot enough to make you want to say, \u201cexcuse me, could you please turn down the radiator?\u201d<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Then there\u2019s the practical side of things \u2014 I didn\u2019t know that route well enough to take it without backup, and there are pretty much no places to sleep or refuel along the way (well\u2026 maybe one). After so many kilometres, we also caught a bit of the \u201ccomfort kick\u201d \u2014 basically, the wisdom that sometimes it\u2019s better to take the safer option and arrive in one piece. We still had plenty of pages left in our <span class=\"s1\">Carnet de Passages<\/span>, so we chose the route through the Emirates instead. The Empty Quarter will have to wait \u2014 maybe someday, with cooler weather and a better plan. \ud83d\ude09<\/p><p class=\"p1\">And now \u2014 the finale: the last chapter of our travel diary \u2014 crossing into <span class=\"s1\"><b>Oman<\/b><\/span>, the first kilometres, the mountains, the bay, and that feeling of closing the loop.
