However, unlike other countries, the rental process here is much less formalized \u2013 which has its advantages, but also certain pitfalls that are important to keep in mind.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">Most rental services are small, privately-owned businesses or even individuals running local operations. Here, no one will ask for your credit card, rental history, or have you sign complicated contracts. Instead, it\u2019s usually a quick conversation, a quick inspection of the scooter, and\u2026 most often, a request for your passport as a deposit.<\/p><p><b>Never, under any circumstances, leave your passport behind!<\/b><\/p><p class=\"p1\">If the rental agent insists, suggest leaving a cash deposit or a copy of your passport instead \u2013 this is always a safer option. In case of any issues, recovering your original document might be more difficult than expected.<\/p><h3 class=\"p1\"><b>\ud83d\udc6e\u200d\u2642\ufe0f Legal responsibility &#8211; what will the police check?<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p3\">Just because the rental agent doesn\u2019t ask many questions, it doesn\u2019t mean that the police will be equally lenient. If a traffic stop occurs \u2013 and these aren\u2019t uncommon here \u2013 you need to be properly prepared.<\/p><p class=\"p1\">What will be required:<\/p><ul><li class=\"p2\"><b>Passport<\/b> &#8211; always have it with you, as it is the primary document for identity verification.<\/li><li class=\"p2\"><b>Cat A driver&#8217;s license <\/b> &#8211; needed to drive a scooter with a capacity of more than 50 cm\u00b3.<\/li><li class=\"p2\"><b>International Driving Permit (IDP)<\/b> &#8211; in accordance with the Vienna Convention of 1968. This is an absolute must, without which driving can end in a fine.<\/li><li><strong>Helmet<\/strong> &#8211; do not travel in a vehicle without a helmet on.<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"p1\">The police in Vietnam are quite strict when it comes to checks. If you\u2019re missing any of these documents, you may be forced to pay an on-the-spot fine, and in the worst case, the vehicle could be confiscated.<\/p><h3 class=\"p1\"><b>Personal responsibility<\/b><\/h3><p class=\"p3\">Unlike European countries, rental agencies in Vietnam are not overly concerned with whether you have the proper driving license. They mainly focus on getting the deposit and renting out the vehicle \u2013 the rest is your responsibility.<\/p><p class=\"p3\">This means that if an accident occurs and the police find that you lack the necessary documents, the costs of medical treatment, repairs, or fines will fall entirely on you.
