Hello everyone!
Today, we want to share a bit about our BMW R1250GS – our trusty companion on countless adventures. We’ll walk you through the accessories we’ve chosen to enhance comfort and safety on the road, and highlight the ones we believe are truly worth investing in. If you’re looking for inspiration to upgrade your motorcycle, you’ve come to the right place!
Where did it begin?
Our motorcycle journey began with a Yamaha Tracer 7, which I purchased from the Uhma Bike dealership in Warsaw in its basic version. Right from the start, I knew that typical touring motorcycles weren’t for me – I wanted a machine that combined agility, dynamism, and pure riding enjoyment. The Tracer 7 checked all those boxes, being light, nimble, and easy to handle. On winding roads and in the city, it maneuvered almost like a bicycle, which was a huge advantage for a beginner.
It was powered by a 689 cc twin-cylinder engine delivering 73.4 horsepower. This provided dynamic performance, especially in the mid-range, making it perfect for daily rides and those first longer trips. Of course, we knew from the start that a motorcycle would never match the comfort of a car, especially on long distances. But for me, comfort wasn’t the priority – it was all about the passion and the pure joy of riding.
Like any motorcycle, it had its limitations. The stock windshield didn’t quite provide adequate wind protection at higher speeds, and while the brakes were fine for everyday use, they could be a bit underwhelming when the bike was fully loaded. Another major drawback for me was the lack of cruise control, especially on highways, where long, monotonous stretches practically beg for a break for your right hand.
Over the course of five months, we covered 10,000 kilometers together, mostly around Poland. What I truly appreciated about the Tracer 7 was its low weight – just 196 kg – which made maneuvering an absolute pleasure. However, for longer trips, where comfort and practicality become more important, I started to feel the lack of more spacious panniers and greater comfort for extended rides.
Why did we choose the BMW R1250GS?
After our experience with the Yamaha Tracer 7, we began searching for a motorcycle that could meet our expectations for longer and more demanding journeys – and we landed on the BMW R1250GS. Riding it is a partnership for us – I’m the rider, and Jadzia is the passenger. This meant that our choice had to prioritize comfort for both of us. While the R1250GS isn’t exactly a luxurious armchair on wheels, it meets those needs well enough to make our shared travels a pleasure rather than a challenge.
We’ve often heard the saying that sooner or later, every motorcyclist ends up with a GS. There’s some truth to that, as this bike truly catches the eye with its design. It’s larger and heavier than our previous one, but we have no regrets about the choice. Its size and heft translate into stability and a solid feel, something we particularly appreciate on long journeys.
The BMW R1250GS is powered by a twin-cylinder boxer engine with a 1254 cc displacement, producing 136 hp at 7750 rpm and 143 Nm of torque at 6250 rpm. Despite its hefty 249 kg curb weight, the bike handles surprisingly lightly, thanks to its low center of gravity, making it remarkably agile for its size.
One of the main reasons people choose this model is its advanced rider-assist electronics. Of course, more electronics can mean a greater risk of potential issues, but the benefits they bring far outweigh the concerns.
During longer trips, we truly appreciate the comfort the R1250GS offers. While it’s not exactly a luxury armchair on wheels and fatigue does set in after hours in the saddle, the comfort is noticeably better than on our previous bike. Plus, thanks to our experience with the Yamaha, we already knew which accessories would be essential to make our journeys even smoother.
