European license plates in Egypt

In recent years, an unusual trend has emerged in Egypt – mounting European plates alongside local ones. Egyptians, especially in Cairo, fascinated by the prestige of Western cars, have begun decorating their vehicles with plates from Germany, the Netherlands and other European countries. Often fake or from recalled vehicles, they have no legal significance, but are seen as a symbol of luxury and social status.

These plates can be seen on luxury cars as well as on more common vehicles such as tuk-tuks and cabs. German plates with the letter “D” are particularly to the liking of Egyptians, symbolizing the precision and high quality of German motorization. Interestingly, some drivers don’t even know what country the plate comes from – they simply treat them as a stylish accessory. Sellers in Egypt offer both genuine and fake plates, which can be bought at markets and roadside stands.

What’s more, European plaques not only add prestige, but also express admiration for Western culture and lifestyle. These plates are purely decorative and not required by law. For many Egyptians, it is a way to stand out on the road and show that they are up to date with trends coming from the West.

Where could these plates have come from?

European license plates, especially German ones, have made their way to Egypt through various means. Some arrive with used cars imported from Europe, where they remain until the cars are fully registered in Egypt. Dealers often buy other plates from scrapped or decommissioned vehicles in Europe. Additionally, these plates can be found on the black market or purchased as decorative items in auto accessory stores, often as fake versions purely for aesthetic purposes.
